ACM ISS 2022
Sun 20 - Thu 24 November 2022 Wellington, New Zealand

This CHI workshop looks to connect indigenous peoples to surfaces and spaces using a media channel of experience that revisits historical narrative, heritage and/or interactive and immersive media applications. We are especially interested in contributions that display cultural resilience inside a digital environment or aligns with a common interest that challenges the status quo. We welcome individuals or groups interested in submitting (but not limited to) interactive design, prototyping, methodology, human-computer interaction, conceptual works that progress indigenous ideas and creative works within a technical lens.

Call for Participation

The Indigenous CHI workshop will take place on Sunday the 20th of November between 9.00am to 2.30pm at the Victoria University of Wellington, Pipitea Campus. The morning will start with tribal introductions thereafter, the focus will be on selected presentations, group workshop and digital displays involving immersive, interactive and spatial tribal technologies.

Indigenous CHI is a newly formed idea that opens avenues to explore areas of interactive spaces and surfaces within an indigenous mode of research. Like progressing aspects by indigenous, for indigenous and, with indigenous that are a benefit to both the sciences and indigenous tribal communities. The goal for the workshop will be too create an environment for people working with tribal communities that use technology to discuss, explore engage and network with each other to strengthen relationships and form new emergent bonds in the spatial sciences.

There is an unexplored potential for the use of immersive technologies within the human-computer interaction spaces of indigeneity which will help strengthen and define the research agenda for this field. The program will consist of a balanced mix of lightning talks, group discussion and activities around data indigenous methods and design aspects of immersive and interactive technologies.
