Bio:

Vikram Mohanty is a PhD candidate in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech. His research focuses on human-AI interaction and crowdsourcing, specifically on developing and studying novel tools that leverage the complementary strengths of AI and collective human intelligence for solving complex, open-ended problems. As part of his research, he built Civil War Photo Sleuth, an online platform that combines crowdsourced human expertise and facial recognition to identify unknown portraits from the American Civil War era. His work has received major press coverage, including Smithsonian, Time, American Way, The History Channel, and Popular Mechanics, and won the Microsoft Cloud AI Research Challenge Grand Prize (2018), the ACM IUI Best Paper (2019) award and the AAAI HCOMP Best Poster/Demo (2018) award. Vikram has worked as a research intern at VSCO, Dataminr, and Toyota Research Institute (TRI). Prior to his PhD, he completed his undergraduate from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur.
